BROOKS, DUFFEY GARNER NATIONAL WEEKLY AWARDS
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech senior linebacker Jordyn Brooks and junior quarterback Jett Duffey collected national honors Tuesday as Brooks was named the Bronko Nagurski Defensive Player of the Week while Duffey garnered Davey O’Brien National Quarterback of the Week and the Maxwell Player of the Week accolades.
The duo now has three weekly awards from the past few days alone as Brooks and Duffey were recognized as the Big 12 Defensive and Offensive Player of the Week, respectively, on Monday. Brooks was also honored as the Walter Camp Foundation’s Defensive Player of the Week on Sunday.
Brooks, the first Red Raider to garner Nagurski Defensive Player of the Week honors since Daniel Charbonnet in 2008, powered the Red Raiders defensively in their 45-35 victory over No. 21 Oklahoma State as he recorded a career-high 19 tackles to go along with three sacks, four tackles for a loss and a forced fumble.
All three totals matched the most by a Big 12 player this season. His 19 tackles marked the most by a Red Raider since Lawrence Flugence notched 21 at Iowa State in 2002. Brooks is now up to 10.5 tackles for a loss through five games, which has already topped his previous career high of 7.5 from a year ago.
Duffey, meanwhile, became the only Big 12 player this season to account for five touchdowns with no interceptions in a game and the first Red Raider to do so since reigning NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes II accomplished the feat twice in 2016. Duffey finished 26-of-44 passing for 424 yards and four touchdowns while rushing for one other.
His 424 passing yards were the most by any quarterback nationally last weekend. It marked the second 400-yard performance of his career as he fell only 20 passing yards shy of his career high that was set a year ago against Texas.
In addition to his two awards today, the signal caller was also mentioned on the Davey O’Brien Great 8 list this week, was one of eight quarterbacks among the Manning Award’s “Stars of the Week” and was an honorable mention selection for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award National Player of the Week.
The Red Raiders return to action Saturday afternoon when Tech makes its first trip to McLane Stadium in Waco. Kickoff between Tech and No. 22 Baylor is slated for 3 p.m. on FOX Sports 1 and the Texas Tech Sports Network.
