According to the Texas Tribune, after a key Republican holdout voted to bring Senate Bill 2 to the floor, the legislation passed 18-13.

A top priority for state leaders, SB 2 will limit annual local government property tax growths and lower the rate to 2.5 percent.

Governor Greg Abbott today released the following statement after the Senate passed Senate Bill 2 to reform property taxes:

“Today the Texas Senate took action to deliver on the promise of reining in skyrocketing property taxes. Thanks to the leadership of Lt. Governor Patrick and Senator Bettencourt, meaningful property tax reform is one step closer to becoming a reality. I look forward to continuing to work with Speaker Bonnen, Chairman Burrows and the entire legislature to provide lasting property tax relief for all Texans.”

The Texas Tribune reports the House has postponed a debate on its own property tax reform legislation, House Bill 2, until April 24.
