Professional tennis is returning to Lubbock when the The West Texas Pro Classic will take place at the McLeod Tennis Center on the campus of Texas Tech University September 26th though October 3rd.
The field of 96 competitors will play in the initial qualifying rounds of the 15K Futures ITF Tournament beginning Sunday, eventually narrowing down to 64 participants in the main draw. The field, including numerous student-athletes from the men's and women's Texas Tech roster, are the most talented, young tennis stars in the world. Advancement in the tournament equate to ATP points or add to pre-existing points for the individual participants.
This tournament marks the first time in 13 years since a professional men's tournament was held in Lubbock. "This is an amazing opportunity for west Texas, the Lubbock tennis community, and Texas Tech Tennis." remarked Texas Tech Men's Tennis head coach Danny Whitehead. "Not only will some of our guys be able to compete against some of the best players out there, but the eyes of the tennis world will be on Lubbock and the Texas Tech campus. It is great for our city, university and program".
Qualifying round draw information will be announced this Saturday. Fans who wish to follow all the tournament action can visit the West Texas Tennis Pro Classic website for up to date information.
