LUBBOCK, Texas -

Texas Tech broke ground on the Womble Basketball Center, the future basketball practice facility, Friday afternoon.

The Womble facility will give the Texas Tech men's and women's basketball teams access to train and develop 24-7.

"I've been fairly closely associated with the basketball program, specifically the men's program, over the past few years and it's a need that we thought we could help address," Dustin Womble, facility donor, said.

Tech president Lawrence Schovanec said the students will not lose any parking spaces after the center is built.

Kirby Hocutt, Tech's athletics director, added it will eliminate a lot of conflict for practices for the teams, opening up the possibility for more events at United Supermarkets Arena.

"There are multiple times when this facility is not available for our men's and women's basketball team because it is a multi-purposed facility. We thought a stand alone practice facility with coach's offices and strength and conditioning could become the hub for Texas Tech Basketball," Hocutt said.

One of the components Hocutt said he is most optimistic about: Recruiting.

"To bring the very best talent in this country here, to play basketball. It's going to allow a place for our current student athletes to sharpen their skills," Hocutt said.
