Student-led initiative addresses teen suicide and overcoming issues

LUBBOCK, Texas -

More teens and young adults die by suicide than from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia, influenza and chronic lung disease combined.

It's a jarring statistic being addressed by Lubbock-Cooper ISD. Youth Summit is a student-led initiative focusing on violence, suicide, drug use and family tragedies.

Speakers included students and professionals talking about how to address and overcome these issues.

"They can relate better to their peers talking about these issues than if I were to be up there. It's the Charlie Brown thing going on, they don't hear what I'm saying sometimes, but when they hear from their peers on these issues they tend to key in and kind of relate better than they do with me," Sarah Allen, teacher at Lubbock Cooper, said.

Students also attended break out sessions to discuss what they've heard and brainstormed other ways to handle issues facing teens.
