Texas Tech fans now able to buy beer and wine at athletic events

LUBBOCK, Texas -

For the first time all Red Raider fans were able to sit back and enjoy a beer at the United Supermarkets Arena.

"We've been talking about it for years, most of the country is doing it anyway so why not," said one fan.

Tech's Board of Regents approved the beer and wine sales back in December. Previously alcoholic beverages were only sold in suites and in a separated area on the side of the arena.

"You're competing with so much now with the digital age and people have so many options of not coming to the game and so what we want to do is make it as much of the amenities you can have at home sitting at home watching the game at home as you do coming out to the United Supermarkets Arena plus you get the great atmosphere today of a sold out crowd and enjoying it with your fellow Red Raider fans," said Robert Giovannetti, Senior Associate Athletics Director with Tech.

Despite the long lines, not everyone was a fan.

"I don't like the fact that Tech is selling alcohol. We have enough problems with drunk drivers on the roads without them helping out here," one fan said.

Giovannetti said precautions have been taken in order to keep everyone safe.

"We encourage people if they've had too much to drink to utilize Uber. We, our staff that is selling and actually handing over the beer and wine have been trained to spot for signs and spot for people that may have had too much to drink, and our goal is to get everyone home safely."

Alcohol sales weren't the only things different for Tech fans. Buying concessions is cheaper, two dollars for popcorn, nachos, and hot dogs. Water and soft drinks are three dollars.
