LPD cracking down on 'porch pirates' this holiday season

LUBBOCK, Texas -

A week after Cyber Monday means those deals you were able to catch online should be delivered to your door. However, if you are not careful, that purchase could be snatched away.

The holiday season is a bonanza for crooks and grinches who prey on package deliveries.

"It only takes seconds for someone to go up to a door, snatch a package and then leave," Tiffany Taylor with the Lubbock Police Department said.

It is a busy time for patrol officers who are actively looking out for those thieves. Police report last December, there were two dozen package thefts, the most of of the entire year.

"It's because people are turning to shopping online during the holidays instead of going to the stores," Taylor said.

An easy way to make sure your package is not left outside as prey is to request a signature from the delivery service and track the package.

"Make sure that somebody is accepting that package in person so you have your hands on it and you can take it inside the house," Taylor said.

If you do not have anyone to accept it, Amazon and popular stores like Best Buy allows you to pick it up.

"You never know, you could be at work for five hours when your package is just sitting there," Julia Jack with Best Buy said. "Here your package is secure the entire time."

Jack said the stores been offering this service for several years now and every year, it has become more popular.

"You get a text when your order is ready so you know everything," Jack said. "So you can just come to us and see us."

Jack adds more people are investing in surveillance cameras. However, Taylor said LPD is working hard to do what it can to prevent theft.

"We also have crime suppression unit officers who are working undercover trying to catch these thieves in the act," Taylor said.

If you do end up a victim, file a police report and turn in any surveillance videos or photos you have.
