LUBBOCK, Texas -

(Press Release)

The Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation (ALCF) awarded UMC Southwest Cancer Center a designated community hospital Center of Excellence for lung cancer treatment. The ALCF Centers of Excellence award recognizes hospitals for their multidisciplinary and patient-centric care. This means the UMC Southwest Cancer Center is offering timely screening, a wide range of treatment options catered to each individual, and mental and emotional treatment as needed.

“Across the U.S., the majority of lung cancer patients are treated in a community hospital near their home,” said Bonnie J. Addario, a lung cancer survivor and founder of ALCF. “The community hospital Center of Excellence program is rooted in the belief that the best way to treat lung cancer is by providing patient-focused, coordinated, multidisciplinary care.”

Receiving this designation means that ALCF identifies UMC as: meeting rigorous qualifying criteria and working as a team to provide patients with access to the latest and greatest in lung cancer care.

“We are fortunate here, at the UMC Southwest Cancer Center, to have this designation,” said Dr. Sanjay Awasthi, Medical Director of the UMC Southwest Cancer Center. “It is recognized by hospital administration as a huge accomplishment, and it means patients don’t have to travel to metropolitan areas to receive the best in lung cancer care.”

“This is a great thing for not only UMC, but also for the people of our region,” said Dr. Lukman Tijani, Cancer Liaison Physician and group lead for lung cancer at the UMC Southwest Cancer Center. “We are the first cancer center in our area recognized by this foundation for our care in the area of lung cancer. It is proof that we have the necessary resources to provide excellent care to our patients with lung cancer.”

The multidisciplinary care that led to this designation includes:

  • Early screening and follow-up programs
  • Tumor genetic testing to formulate an effective treatment plan
  • Minimally-invasive testing and treatment options
  • Access to new targeted therapies and immunotherapies
  • Access to clinical trials
  • In-depth patient education and support, including psychosocial and nutritional support
