LUBBOCK, Texas -

Austin police confirmed that the body found in Lady Bird Lake is Martin Gutierrez, a Texas Tech alumnus who was first reported missing by family last Tuesday. Lubbock resident Macy Lopez grew up knowing the entire Gutierrez family. They are all originally from Big Spring.

"I'm very close with his older sister Melanie as well and so I've known the family," said Lopez. "I've known Martin and just always looked at him as you know a good friend of mine a or a little brother."

Gutierrez moved to Austin early this year to live with his older brother Mitchell. Lopez found out about Martin's disappearance through a text message. Family and friends who were in the know thought Martin may have had his phone turned off and didn't automatically assume the worst.

"I think it took a little while for everything to really hit that he was truly gone," said Lopez. "He was no where to be found."

The night before Martin had gone out for dinner with his older brother and friends. At the end of the night Martin had trouble finding a ride home.

"From what we know his last phone call was at 1:27 am looking for a ride," said Lopez. "That friend was working and couldn't pick him up and that was the last phone call he ever made."

Austin Police Department found a body in Lady Bird Lake on Monday and confirmed that the body was, in fact, Martin Gutierrez. The cause of death is still under investigation. APD is waiting on the medical examiner's office to finalize the toxicology report.
